why you should always be kind

Most of us use our social media platforms to show the world the parts of our lives that make us feel good, but what's really behind the glitz & glam? A story. A story that makes life seem idyllic, and 'perfect'. A story which only shows the good side to life, and a story that shields the viewer from any loss, pain, heartache, anxiety, or exhaustion the person may be experiencing.

During these difficult times, it's very easy to use social media as an escape mechanism, a beautiful route out of reality. We are, unfortunately, constantly shown an unobtainable life; of one with unrealistic ideals. As restrictions increase and lockdowns loom, a lot of us turn to social media to keep up with our friends and increase our screen-time in the process. We are shown picture-perfect lives, self-care nights, and what seems to be happiness.

Alas, in a lot of situations this is not the case. We all cope in different ways, but from personal experience, my self-esteem crumbled during the first wave of coronavirus. I had the stress of online courses, and not being able to see my friends. I know from my friends' accounts of their time during the pandemic that they too, felt overwhelmed and alone. That's why it's so important, especially now, to be kind to other people. Show them compassion and empathy. Don't judge people based off of their mannerisms, or appearance on social media, because now, more than ever, we never really know what people are going through.

Here are a few simple ways to become more understanding & sympathetic:

Check-in with people-

a lot of people won't talk to others about their problems in fear of appearing 'selfish' or rude. Just let them know that it's okay to not be okay and that you're there for them should they need you.

Judge not-

A lot of the time, even if it's only subconsciously, we tend to judge people. Take a step back from your thoughts, and remind yourself that there is always more going on behind the scenes that you know nothing about.

Don't feel offended-

If a friend hasn't' returned a message or a call, remember to be patient and not take it personally. Many people are feeling overwhelmed currently, and they could be taking some time off. If however, you are concerned for your friends' safety, remind them that you're always open to talk.

Spread kindness-

As the icon, Harry Styles says: 'treat people with kindness'. Whether you send someone a message wishing them well, or that you're grateful for them, I actively encourage you to spend 5 minutes of your day practising gratitude & compassion.

Self-care-

Heal from within, and focus on yourself. If you feel the need to tear someone down for something, pause and reflect. Why do you feel this way? If you need some tips on confidence check out my other blog post: 'confidence, a game-changer.'

Everyone is fighting a battle no one knows about, and now being literally & metaphorically socially distanced, people will struggle. I'm always here if you want to talk to anyone but remember to not be so hard on yourself, and check-in with your loved ones, they might need it :)

all my love,
